Lost share certificate & company takeover

I was issued with a share certificate pre 1997 for suter plc. The company has since changed and I have lost the share certificate. Are the shares still valid? How and where can I get a copy certificate to sell them? Any help appreciated.

Suter were taken over by Ascot plc in 1996 who were in turn taken over by Dow Chemicals around 2000.

You should have received an Ascot share certificate (I think it was a mostly 'paper' deal -though there may have been a bit of cash too). The Ascot sale to Dow was, if memory serves, all cash - so you should have had a cheque.
  • Thanks. Didn't get either? Can I pursue or is it to late?

If it were me I'd start here and ask them for advice (by email).

BTW didn't you nortice that you hadn't been receiving dividends, copies of accounts etc for past 15 years ? Even if you'd lost the share certificate it wouldn't stop them sending you stuff.
  • Not had shares before. Were given them as goodwill instead of a pay increase. It's a case of you don't know what you don't know!

You wouldn't believe how many of these I have come across in the past few weeks at work!!! It is more common than you'd think.

If all of the above is correct (regarding the takeovers), your shares will be held on as an electronic statement. You'll need to contact BNY Mellon and ask them. Usually the US based BNY are a lot more helpful than UK.

  • Many thanks. I have emailed them and await a response. Thanks again.
