Are second hand items covered by contents insurance?

Hi, I am hoping someone will know the answer to my question!
I have dropped and broken a laptop computer that was given to me in a second hand condition by a family member. As I didn't purchase the item, will it still be covered on my accidental damage insurance, and will the insurer still replace it on a new for old basis? I can't find any information in my policy document about this!
Thanks.

Yes you are covered.
But a standard insurers check the item is yours to reduce fraud claims.
So you might have difficulty proving it's yours.
You could ask the person that gave it to you whether they have a receipt of proof of payment on a bank statement.
Do you have any boxes, manuals, accessories?0 -
No, none of that. I imagine that it was registered at the time of purchase though and the family member would verify that he passed it on to us.
