Bank Error - What to do

Hi all,

I paid a cheque in yesterday and the cashier marked it as cash, so instead of having to wait for the cheque to clear, the funds were available instantly.

This morning, I've logged on again and now the cheque is showing as paid in too, so in theory, unless they somehow spot it, in a few days I will have been paid twice.

Obviously it's early days and they may spot it before it clears, but if they don't should I let them know as I fear it will only come back to bite me. Should I plead ignorance?

Where does the law stand with this type of thing? Afterall, it's not my fault they've paid it in twice. Should I quickly spend it and then offer to pay it back in installments if anything happens?

Would be interested to know your thoughts...

Many thanks!

Nope ... their till will not balance, so they will soon notice and reverse the duplicate credit.

What ignorance would that be? You seem to know perfectly well what has happened.

Given your intentions it would be theft or fraud if you kept it.

What's more likely to happen is that they will spot it, adjust your account and charge you for an unauthorised overdraft if it sends you into the red.
