unmployment benefit

Options
Hi can anyone offer advice please, I know all the jobseekers benefits have changed,my nephew has been laid off at work and unfortunatly his girlfriend has called it a day so he is both homeless and unemployed, he is very depressed and wants to move in with his retired parents my brother and his wife for a while but is he entitled to unemployment benefit? or are his parents still expected to support him. They truly cant as they both suffer ill health and have no savings or anything but they feel terrible if they cant at least give him a roof over his head, is he better off living rough with friends though just to get any benefit? someone has told him that under 25 his mum and dad are expected to keep him. thanks for the advice.

He can make a claim for JSA at the Jobcentreplus, then go to local authority/council for housing costs.

He won't get housing costs for living with his parents.

They may be getting confused with student finance rules. If you're under 25 and don't meet the other criteria for independence you are assessed on your parents incom for income-assessed student finance.
It's not applicable for benefits though there are different rules for working tax credits if you're under 25.

Get him to put his details into the turn2us/direct.gov benefits calculators to see what he's entitled to or else just call the dwp benefits line.
