Didcot London advanced booking?

Last week I had to travel from Taunton to Didcot after 11.00 and the single ticket was £27.00. I had to return the next day and started to book a ticket at 09.00 and was told it would be £72.00 so I waited until after 11.00 for the £27.00 ticket.
Working on that logic I used the Web to check the price of a return rail ticket Didcot to London and found that there appeared to be little difference between travelling tomorrow and travelling two months later.
Is it that I do not understand how to use the system or is there really so little difference between long term booking and going tomorrow?

Didcot is a London suburban station. Very few such stations offer any discount for advance bookings on journeys to London.

BTW your Taunton Didcot fare should have been £48 return, purchasable on the day - there was no need to book two singles. Booked well in advance it could have been as low as £8.50 each way.
