You're welcome.
In the Co-Op I can buy a pack of 'Elmwood' pork sausages for £2.00,in my butchers over the road,I can get a pound of his selection, say Pork & Leek for £1.80.(about 8 sausages, same as the Co-Op ones.
Meatballs ready made from the Co are about £2.50 for 12,Buy minced pork from the butchers for a fraction of that,a jar of Italian herbs & make your own.
Eggs,1/2 dozen from the Co are over a quid,I can buy 10 from a local farm, sold in the butchers for a quid.0 -
started doing this , instead of egg I use self raising flour and water to make a thick batter
freezers full of the fillets as they are 2 packs for £5 in Tesco's at the moment ( works our about 50 p each fillet )
treat for me is proper naturally smoked undyed haddock , used to be a staple when I was a kid but now sadly an expensive luxury
I bought some lemon sole in the fish shop and few weeks back and had to swallow hard at the price. It was beautiful but I don't remember it being more expensive than sirloin steaks before.:eek:0 -
What is a luxury now?
Chicken. Having chicken thighs is an extravagance, saved for Sundays. Bought from the butcher.
Lamb. Must be at least six months since I could afford two steaks. Roughly the time that some TV chef said it was cheap and tasty - it doubled in price overnight. Roast leg or shoulder of lamb must have been done at least 2 years ago.
Beef. I think I had roast beef for Sunday Dinner um...[thinks very hard]...about 8 years ago. I can honestly say that I have never had a beef rib roast, a rib eye steak or anything more fancy than a bit of sirloin/rump when reduced to clear. I can get a half pound of pretty good lean mince from the butcher, which can feed 3 of us twice with pasta or mash.
Cheese. Try and avoid buying it as much as possible. Then when we have a pasta meal, I try and get the smallest, strongest flavoured piece to grate just on the top.
Fresh vegetables. Used to be meat and at least 4 different veggies. Nowdays, it's a tiny bit of meat and some frozen peas and sweetcorn if I'm feeling flush.
Fruit. I try to have some fruit around all the time for DD, but now it's one or two types at most - and all of it has to be eaten before I buy something else the following week. She can eat a whole punnet of strawberries as they are (no sugar or cream), but that is usually reserved for an extra special treat/when she is extremely upset about something (when she eats them in the bath).
I am growing veg and a little fruit this year (which DD shall eat most of), but I do tend to rely on tea, toast and the occasional egg for most of the time.
This isn't fun.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

My Mum bought a pack of these in Lidl and they were very tasty and much cheaper than the branded ones I've seen in the big supermarkets. I think they're a German make anyway so the ones in Lidl are probably made by the same company!0 -

Spike, I use the same butchers as you and have found their prices are going up and up. The last time I bought pork and leek sausages I paid over £3 for 10 sausages. Which fish and chip shop is it that charges £7 for fish and chips so I know to avoid it?

It was "The Captains Table" although I think I had some battered mushrooms as well.
Still find Jim Devonport's cheaper than the Co tho.0 -
i live in a small fishing town on the scottish coast, fish supper at our local chippy is £5.95  although to be fair this does also come with a slice of bread and butter.
chicken and eggs are a treat for us, i refuse to buy battery chickens/ eggs. unfortunately my DD's 2 fave meals are cheese omlettes or roast chicken. and despite looking out my window and seeing nothing but fields, we have no farm shops.<insert super cool inspirational sig here>0 -
The nearest chippy to my old flat charged £6.20 for cod and £7.50 for skate. Then another £1.30/£1.80 for chips.
They weren't even that big or particularly fresh, but there were no alternatives if someone wanted a takeaway. I generally didn't bother.
I think someone had a friend who worked for the award organisation that gave them a prize for several years running, as they always completely changed their food for the week of the judging.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0
