I used to eat out or have takeaways a lot (once or twice a week) -don't do that much now at all. Also used to go to the local beauty salon for my nails / massage / etc - not now. I had a pretty good lifestyle actually and am now really annoyed with myself that I took it for granted back then - things have changed now and I realise how much I miss it. But the good side is that I am cooking home meals more and that's probably healthier!

I have no idea what a fish supper costs these days - the only time we tended to have them when we are bringing in silage or hay on the farm and it's quicker then everyone stopping and coming in for a sit down meal. Usually sandwiches for lunch and fish suppers for dinner out in the field. I still think it's quite a treat eating fish and chips in the open air with a proper glass bottle of irn bru to wash it down!

I don't miss takeaways as the downside to living out in the country is that by the time you get it home it needed to be reheated in the microwave and never really tasted quite the same so we don't bother with them.

I think there is either an Aldi or a Lidl in Kilsyth which is quite close to me - I'll venture in there soon I think (I really should find out which one it is first though I think) to see about the fruit. I've bought my fruit from a local greengrocer rather then the supermarkets but even they are having to pass on price increases.

I do feel really bad about the state of things though - I'm fortunate to have a good job, even if it's no longer secure, and when I read some of the posts here I realise how many people are so much worse off than me but still manage to maintain a sense of humour and pass on their hints and tips to the rest of us.

Why aren't the OS people advising the government? - they could learn a thing or two here:D

    Butter!

It has shot up in price. Lurpak spreadable is on offer at £2.50 a 500g tub!

Baking with stork, and mostly not bothering for anything else.

Butter is my big bugbear in the price increases. It's become a personal mission for me to search out butter below the £1 mark and I'm not having much success. Being a farm girl (and liking my food way to much) I just can't bring myself to use margarine but the price of butter is getting serious now.

Chicken is a treat for us these days, because I refuse to buy value/battery chicken and free range (or the next best thing, as I can't always get hold of free range) is so expensive. We hardly ever have it, and when we do it's usually either a whole chicken that does a few meals, or some free range chicken thighs.

I've found that buying my meat from my butchers is cheaper than the supermarket!

For all the fish n chip lovers, have you tried Hugh F W mackerel - I remember watching the tv show, quote:

Hugh’s recipe is so simple it isn’t really a recipe, more of a method – dust an un-skinned, pin boned mackerel fillet in seasoned flour, dip it thoroughly in beaten egg and then deep fry for just a couple of minutes until the fillet turns golden and floats to the top of the oil

started doing this , instead of egg I use self raising flour and water to make a thick batter

freezers full of the fillets as they are 2 packs for £5 in Tesco's at the moment ( works our about 50 p each fillet )

treat for me is proper naturally smoked undyed haddock , used to be a staple when I was a kid but now sadly an expensive luxury
