Yes, your laptop has a FireWire connection. So you just need this lead.0

it shouldn't make any difference whether you use USB or firewire. It's only a file transfer, not a capture.
According to the spec for that Sony laptop it DOES have firewire..

So I wouldn't need the software as well then? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
No, just the FireWire lead. Then you can just use the built in Windows Movie Maker.
If you don't believe me, try using the USB connection for the video and see if you are happy with the result.0 -
sure.. i sees it!
maybe it's not supported on the GS-17 model, but other owners of panasonic camcorders are reporting..
"There is a "USB Function" menu option (on the camera) which you can set between "MOTION DV" (720x520) and "WEB CAM" (320x240).."0 -
Thanks both for the help - I'll have a play tomorrow once the camcorder is charged up again.
Plus I really must get to grips with this laptop - I had no idea it had movie maker on it. (competition win, so wasted on me really.)All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

If you are going to try with USB, do so in conjunction with the software in post #9.0

Yes it's cheap and nasty, but it is under £30 including a memory card, and will do the job well enough - a friend used one like this to shoot a vid for a fostering agency etc - portable cheap easy video.0 -
I'd stick with the Panasonic.0
