New glasses

I recently had some new glasses. I made it clear before the test started that my previous varifocal glasses were fine for distance and fine for using the computer (I need everything magnified on screen, but the glasses are fine for focus subject to that), but although I could read with the bottom part, it was getting harder.

When I picked up my new glasses, the dispenser was clear that they offer good aftersales service. (They have done my family's glasses for years.)

I can't see properly at any distance through the one lens, so my other eye is doing all the work, and I can't see clearly through more than a small proportion of the other lens. Looking across the room, my old glasses are much better at distance, and the new ones don't seem to be any better for reading.

Before I go back, I want to be clear of my rights. I don't want them to send them off for new lenses, I want my money back.

Am I right in thinking that it's reasonable to use them a few days to see if my eyes will adjust but still be able to reject them? I have very strong lenses and always take a few days to adjust fully to new ones.

This is particularly important as I'm not on a massively high income and after my NHS voucher, there was still £140 to pay on them. (How come opticians never seem to be able to offer high prescription lenses for the amount of the voucher? :( )

The reason I don't want to simply have new lenses put in the frames is that I want a new eye test elsewhere and to start from scratch.

    Why are you so certain you want your money back? Surely you still need new glasses and changing the lenses could rectify the problem. Just trying to understand

    I'm not confident that they'll come up with a better prescription next time. I'd rather pay for a new eye test somewhere else and start from scratch than stick with them. I went back to them after going elsewhere last time but I think it was a mistake. The last lenses I got from them had to be redone, too. I don't want to explain in detail why I went to them for my prescription, but let's just say that they're specialists.

    I would have thought that you would have to give them a chance to rectify the problem. It is probably something very small. I have the same problem, just an adjustment of the nose luge sometimes sorts it out. Or the arms,

    I think youre being unreasonable expecting your money back.
    Just go back and explain to them its only fair really.

    you are a part of the eye test process, and if the prescription isnt quite right, it should be an easy task to have another go.

    I wouldnt throw away years of good service without giving them a chance. Aftersales is what it is about, and I dont recall many decent opticians who dont do this well

    I can see where you're coming from, but it's not the adjustment of the frames. I've held them in front of my eyes and moved them all around and there's nowhere on the one lens that I can see properly through. But more to the point, they haven't adjusted the prescriptions to make my eyes work together.

    I see what you mean about fairness, so maybe if I go back and see what they can do and if that doesn't work, I think it might be simplest to write them off completely and start again. There's a specialist place in London that I used to go to and it might be worth the coach fares to get a prescription from them.

    I can see where you're coming from. Mind you, the eye test took 2 hours! :)

    It could be that someone, somewhere pulled the wrong lens out of a drawer somewhere, maybe they found a -1.5 instead of a +1.5 or something - perhaps the handwriting was scrappy on the prescription? Who can tell?!

    Give them a chance to remedy the situation, it may be nothing to do with the skill and competence of the optician, just a bit of bad luck somewhere down the line.

    they were actually making me dizzy and disorientated. I went back and just a simple adjusmtnent worked wonders.

    Its no good you trying to self diagnose with the lenses, youre not the expert. You will have to give them a chance to rectify
    the problem because then you wouldnt have a leg to stand on if they came chasing yu for it, you'd be paying for them, and any new ones you buy. Give it a try at least.
