W reg mondeo off Ebay for £850. 2l zetec engine, ghia trim, working heater (:)) and blooming lovely to drive. Had done 144k when I bought it, 6 weeks later and up to 148k with no problems whatsoever. Can't go wrong with a Mondeo - cheap to buy, cheap to run and cheap to get parts for when they (rarely) go wrong.

Fuel costs are under 10p a mile as I fill up at Morrisons (42.9p/l) and get a fiver voucher every few weeks.

Where's my nearest Morrison's - cheapest petrol is 85.4p round here?

I bought my little Peugeot 105 at a year old, because it was so cute and I liked the slope of the rear lights! It's now 13, and doesn't give me much grief since I stopped taking it to the main dealer a year ago. Before that it always seemed to need something expensive done at service and MOT time. This year it just needed a light bulb!

I'm hoping it will last me until I can retire in 2011, if it doesn't I shall be looking for a new job.

  • Argh cars!

Cars have made me skint. Passed my test at 19 (2.5 years ago) and got a lovely VW Bora for £4,500. Sold for £3,500 8 months later. Then got a Saab 93, bag of !!!! for £2,700, sold for £2,100 3 months later.

Then I got me Saab 95 3.0V6, had it lowered, tuned etc... pushes out around 250bhp, love it. Turbo & thottlebody went last year, and crank has gone this year. Insurance is £2000, it's £60 to fill up, but I looooove it. I really really love it. Until I get the crankshaft fixed I've picked up a 2.5 V6 Ford Probe, which is good fun and much cheaper. Then people wonder why I left it so late to pass my test!

The price of 42.9p/l is for LPG not petrol ;)

I noticed that a couple of the posts on this thread mentioned the difficulties of choosing a duff banger or a solid gold bargain

I cam across this site some time ago

    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm

Enter the car that you're interested in and it tells you what's good, what's bad, what to look for, and details of any recalls

Buying a "good" car is always going to involve a certain amount of luck, but at least this is a way of improving the odds in your favour

Thanks for the brilliant link. very informative site.
  • There are many benefits to having a new car but the best one, which I will soon experience, will be to have the monthly repayments staying in your bank account rather than going off to the bank - £373 a month in my case!!

I don't intend changing the car for a few years yet, and I've had it for 3 1/2 years so far.

As I suffered the 'drive off forecourt' depreciation, no-one else is going to benefit from the car now.

  • I'm never going to buy another front wheel drive car unless I have to. So that limits my choice to old BMWs, MX5, Sierras, Smart Car, Elise, kit car. Enough choice anyway.

Buy an Impreza - AWD - Brilliant fun!
