  • After reading a few of the recommendations of cheap cars I had to register to say about my Triumph Acclaim! I have had three now and they are all really good reliable cars.

The first one I bought for £125. It was an 1981 and really fast (faster than boy racers). It started every morning and I loved having a 'classic' car. When I had little accident crashing into a wall and had to replace a wing, I joined the Triumph Acclaim forum on Yahoo, where many other helpful Acclaim owners were there to help out with parts and advice - whenever I have had a problem they have always sorted me out.

The thing is these cars, although old are rather retro and although a 1.3 have a twin carb (Honda) engine and you can usually get a good one for £150 - £400 off Ebay (although I recommend a viewing first), the Triumph Acclaim yahoo forum or

For two of us it costs £160 for insurance (at age 26 and 28) in Bristol which is dead cheap. Lots of people laugh at my car but it costs me next to nothing - It is in the lower tax bracket and will also tow if you want it to. I just laugh at the peoplewho laugh at my car as I can spend the money that I save on not having car credit high insurance and tax on mor important things in life!

My current one was previously shown as the classic model at the birmingham Classic car show at the NEC, and has been round France and beat all the other variaties of Triumph at a race track - and it only cost £400!

Take a look at the website http://www.a222.co.uk/acclaim/index.html to see what I mean!

Thanks for looking at this post. I know of two for sale in Bristol if anyone is interested!

Truimph Acclaims! That takes me back :) I got knocked off my bmx by one when i was younger! :rotfl:
  • We now have a safe a reliable rover 25 (3 yrs old) and although we may be paying over the odds as it's on finance but it's only got 20,000m on it (Which is great for a 3 yr old car!) and yes I know rover have gone bust etc BUT we'll be saving a fortune by having a newer car that doesn't need any major repairs doing on a weekly basis...

I hope the above it true, my fil in law had, had a guts full of driving a 52 plate renault laguna around that seemed to spend more time in the renault garage than outside his house, so he sold it and bought a 54 rover, hoping for also for good old safety & reliabilty, he has just spent £1600 on it, after just 12 months of driving, not to mention the depreciation value, I think he is just unlucky with cars !!

You should try to get your other half to buy a reliable Japanese car like a Honda or a Mazda. My grandson works for a car parts company that supplies spares to the local garages, and they don't even stock Honda or Mazda parts. Why?? They are never asked for any as the cars never break down. Now that has to be a recommendation.
