  • Sorry to disagree with you, but as a former primary school teacher with four children of my own, in my experience all six year olds need their hand to be held and need watching like a hawk!

Holding his hand when he's out because he'll put himself in danger is a mobility need, not a care need.

Where it says on the form 'can your child walk', tick NO, then put what happens when you are out.
My DS is autistic, and the first time I filled out the form I answered yes to that question, but then put down his needs when out and about. Because I'd put yes he can walk, they ignored all the info, so he got no mobility.
On renewal, I ticked 'no', then put in the needs and got mobility as well as care.

    HRM or LRM?

The charity Cerebra have a useful guide of how to claim DLA for a child:

At 6, all mine were certainly dressing themselves, and able to use the loo independently (mostly without accidents), and doing their own teeth / face / hands routine under supervision (ie I'd make sure the toothbrush was applied to the surface of the teeth for a minute or more, rather than just waved under the tap and in the mouth; check that soap was applied to hands and flannel applied to face).

Sadly filling in the DLA forms highlights what the person can't do, so it's a bit depressing ...

As for mobility, many 6 year olds need careful watching when out and about, and none can be left unsupervised, but not all will run off if they don't have their hand held - even if they are only staying close because the alternative is holding your hand! Some kids 'get' that, but not all.
