British gas tarriffs

Hi,

On BG. Very happy with service so don't want to change.

Currently paying 'standard' prices on both gas and electric. Report my meter readings online every month. Was in a price fix but they have both long expired.

Currently pay avg £40pm on each.

Going to give thema ring tomorrow, are there any options I should be looking at? My main concern at present is that I expect gas prices to soar agin this winter. I think it would be a good move to fix now.

Thanks

Have you used the price comparison sites ? Input your annual kWh useage and see what comes out.

If your wanting to stay with BG the cheapest tariff is websaver 12 which will be over £100 saving against Standard. Alternatively use the comparison websites to find the cheapest in your area with your consumption.

Any tariff you switch to will be cheaper than Standard-it is the most expensive, so you are simply throwing money away as long as you stay on it. As advised, use a comp site.

    Hi,

Phoned them and unless I start paying by DD there is no cheaper tarriff than what i'm on. I'm on the one where you submitt your metter readings monthly, I think its called energysaver or somethign like that.

The fixed until 2013 tarrifs are at far too high a pemium to make a saving. IIRC 19%+ on gas and 24%+ on electric over standard prices.

So switch to DD if you want to save money. The choice is yours.

Not quite (re the fix to 2013).

    They have two fixed options:

Fixed price June 2012 - premium of 19% for gas and ele
Fixed price March 2013 - premium of 25% for gas and ele.

You must be on online saver 3? If so, websaver 12 may be cheaper for you.

Indeed,,but Websaver 12 is DD only. So the OP is filtering out all the best tariffs by refusing to use fixed monthly DD, which is required on almost all the best deals.

Really not a fan of DD, like to be fully in control of my usage and my payments. Had bad experiances with utility companies taking far more than they need to and using DD to facilitate it.

Happy paying £80pm total and that covers me for any spike over the winter period.
  • If the utility company does take too much (rare these days) you can contact your bank and they will refund under DD indemnity scheme immediately.

You really are shooting yourself in the foot by refusing to go onto DD - and you are also running the risk of late payment fees should you miss a bill.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

You control the DD, not the utility co. They have to advise you in advance if they want to increase it.
