NPower GO SAVE anomaly

I am on SOL 18 with NPower and received a letter stating I would be transferred to Go Save wef 1/7/11.

I have checked Comparison websites and note that the tariff they say applies to Go Save is different in my letter from NPower!

My letter shows a standing daily charge and one unit rate.

Comparison sites, inc NPower say that the Go Save tariff has NO standing charge and a 2 tier unit rate!

Working it out the standing charge option is much cheaper over £200!

My question is, is NPower obliged to charge me the rate shown in their letter?

Chris

If you did stay with the 'Go Save' they'd probably send you a letter within a month to tell you they're increasing the rates anyway. (which is what seems to have happened to me for the last few years) I've got the same letter, offering 'Go Save' and on checking the websites, after my £100 is included, I'm still better off with npower SOL22.

Does your "New tariff" show a Daily Standing Charge"?

I got the same letter yesterday. My SOL 18 will end and they are offering me Go Save which has a very expensive daily standing charge. I don't want it, so I phoned up and they told me I could change to SOL22. This is still more expensive than SOL18 but better than Go Save.

I will look to switch power company all together. If Npower don't want to reward loyalty, then why should I bother?

In exactly the same position as the OP.

Got the letter stating that I would be moved onto a different tariff. The last time they done this they moved me onto one that was about 10 times more expensive and they didn't even send a letter to warn me that time (although they claim they did, but I am 100% sure they didn't) So I was at least thankful they had the decency to tell me this time!

Gave them a call telling them I wanted to make sure the tariff they were switching me too was their cheapest, to which the guy relied.... "I can guarantee you it won't be"... Gee I wonder why!!! Scum!

Switched over to SOL22, as the price was pretty much the same as SOL18.

Still pretty scummy for them to behave like this though.

If you are planning to avoid companies that do not reward loyalty then you will all have to dig out your wood-choppers and unblock your chimneys.

For every one post here condemning defaulting to an expensive tariff there'll be another condemning being switched to a cheap tariff with a lock-in.

It is up to YOU to read your terms and note when any transition will be likely and it is up to YOU to then choose which path you prefer.

Unfortunately you guys are missing MY point!

I have worked it out and the standing charge is far cheaper than a first tier charging so much for a set amount of KWH.

I know exactly my usage in both gas and electric in Kwh, IMO the only figure to use in comparison sites.

Then calculate the cost of the standing charge per year and the first number of units at the first tier rate and you will be amazed!

Usually if there is no standing charge then the unit rate is higher but in this case NPower has stated the rate is the same as the 2 tier rate!

Needless to say NPower has not returned my call querying my letter!

I would like to know if those of you that are on SOL 18 and received a letter from NPower saying you will be transferred to Go Save, what tariff is shown!

Is it only a Daily Standing charge and one unit rate?

    Thanks

Yes - one standing charge and one unit rate for each commodity . My moan is that the new bill is an extra £263 (23.4%).I had already complained to them about an increase of 20% last January .I also believe that there is another increase later this year .I cannot do a proper comparison because as you have already mentioned there is a disparity between tariffs for Go Save.

Just spoke to Lauren at NPower and got the low down at last!

The Go Save tariff offered to existing customers is NOT the one shown on any website, so comparison sites do not give the correct picture!

If you use the NPower comparison option, front page, add postcode and select bottom choice, fill in your details and select SOL 18. It know from that you are on the customer tariff and will compare accordingly.

Much to Lauren's surprise all the 4 options showed I would be at least £125 WORSE off on SOL 22 and even worse off on the other 3 options!

There is no simple answer, but to get each suppliers tariff and work it out for yourself!

  • I am working through understanding the changes Npower are making (rolling changes based on contract end dates) and you should be very wary of the latest SOL21/22 tariffs. Those with no standing charge do appear to be cheaper than staying on your old SOLxx tariff using standard 'go save' prices.... Simple spread sheet can confirm this. Electricity RateA units are average through the year, but CAUTION, the gas RateA units are loaded to the winter months. So a simple calculation based on annual consumption, xxx units at RateA, and yyy at RateB is not enough. You have to know your monthly/quarterly spend and the monthly RateA units.... For example, Nov - Feb the RateA units are 882pm. May-Sep 45, others 272 (total 4572). For me, SOL21 gas in 1Q2011 is +18% over go save with SC.

Do the comparison sites account for this I wonder.
