The thing about frozen veg is often it is frozen very quickly after being picked so it preserves more of the vitamins and trace minerals that start to degrade with time. For me I would far rather buy a bag of frozen peas then sit and pod pounds of peas!

I do have some frozen mash in the freezer but buy a potato ricer ladies and gents and you can have silky smooth mash all of the time :)

I buy bottled water for my boys to take to school because we have horrid water out of our taps! We filter all of our water but the boys take water to school rather than have reusable bottles which fester in the bottom of bags getting mouldy

Everyone is different and at the end of the day if you have the choice to spend some money or make it yourself surely that is the beauty of OS rather than being told what you should and shouldnt buy?

Loads of things - travel for work, travel for pleasure, look after family (who don't necessarily live just round the corner), spend time with friends, socialise, go to the gym, do triathlons, get some relief from arthritic joints not having to peel and chop... the same things that everyone else does. We're all normal people, just some spend more on food!

Yay just seen this thread and I never bought any of them anyway. I think the best one there is the pasta sauces in jars ppl buy"to save time" it takes no longer to open a tin of tomatoes and throw some herbs and garlic in???? Yet the likes of Dolmio for a couple of quid has always struck me as scandalous..until recently you could get a decent tin of tomatoes for about 30-35 p,

The original post seems to be about PREPARED frozen veg.... so not saying there's anything wrong with frozen veg in general, but to add your own butter/spices etc which makes sense to me. ie Tesco roasting parsnips, £1.15 kg or Aunt Bessie's honey glazed parsnips, £2.99 kg.

With the exception of No6 (which I do buy as I like sparkling water) these are all instant/time-saving items and while I don't use them all of the time it is sometimes handy to have them available and can't really agree that 'we should never buy them again'.

I have been slated on a forum and given a lesson in how to make my own mash -wish I had the roll eye smiley - for daring (shock-horror!) to admit I had bought pre-prepared mash. Sometimes life just gets in the way of food prep and it is ide3al to be able to use ready prepped stuff for ease and my sanity:)

One of the best christmas dinners I had was our first with the girls when they were six months old - everything came from M&S in trays to shove in the oven or microwave, it was quick and easy and mess free and tasted lovely (with the exception of the poultry gravy which tasted and looked like sludge so out came the bisto jar);) Since then I have made chrissy dinners from scratch but would do this like a shot again if the mood took me!

I couldn't agree more - time is money as they say and life is too short to make your own potato dauphinoise or (heaven forbid) even mashed potato. Yes, you can buy a huge bag of potatoes for the same price but if they go off before I get chance to use them surely that's a false economy anyway. The same applies to frozen vegetables vs fresh.

We always buy pre-prepared dishes for Christmas because our hard earned time off is as valuable to us as our hard earned money. For me good money-sense is about awareness of how you spend and making informed choices - not always taking the cheapest option.

I'd also disagree with the frozen veg, prepacked salad, etc being a waste of money. I work with people with (often chronic) arthritis conditions, as well as other limiting and fatigue-related illnesses, and one of the parts of my job I spend a lot of time on is trying to educate my patients on the fact that they do, and probably always are, because of their condition only have a limited amount of energy with which to get through the day, and how, if they want to live a fullfilling life, they need to choose wisely which battles they want to fight, and how to cut down on unnecessary tasks.

For many of my patients prepared maels, frozen veg, etc is the difference between being more independent and having to rely on someone else coming in to help them prepare their food. I know which is the more expensive!
