Unauthorised credit card payment... help!

Yesterday my wife had a payment of over £300 taken from her Barclays current account that she knew nothing about... it wasn't authorised by her and it initially wasnt clear what the payment was for.

After calling and then visiting the bank, it transpires that the amount taken was due to the balance on a credit card that she had with Barclays in 2004... she stopped using it around that year and thought she closed it.

We assume she didnt officially close it (she obviously can't remember since it was so long ago) and there was probably a small remaining balance on there that has gained interest/charges over the years.

She has received no communications about this (i.e. there hasn't been any statements or letters through the post). She's also had 2 meetings in the last 12 months alone with the bank manager to discuss her account benefits etc. and it was never raised.

Are Barclays allowed to do this? What are our options? It seems totally wrong to me that a Barclays have allowed this debt to grow for 6 or 7 years, not let my wife know at any time that she owes this money and then just randomly choose yesterday to automatically take a payment!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
