Privately bought 2nd hand piano - help

We bought this for £250 in good faith from a couple who had the piano for 20 years, they'd bought it for £250.

We knew it had to be tuned. When the tuner came, he spent ages on it & said he hoped we didn't pay for it - it could not be tuned to proper pitch due to its age - especially the piece of wood that secures the top of the strings.

We asked the couple if, given that neither party knew the state of the insides, they would consider giving us some of our money back. Three long conversations later and they still will not budge & are laughing all the way to the bank. The guy actually said he'd feel bad selling it for more than £50 given what he knows now! But he wont give us any of our money back.

We paid £60 tuning and £55 removal on top!

We have no rights to protect us at all, do we?

Bo

    Caveat emptor

This is a private sale. Consumer regulations wont cover you because you weren't dealing with a business. If the seller wont make a gesture of goodwill (they are under no obligations to), you are stuck.

    Hi Bojangles,
Sorry to hear that, it must be very annoying and disappointing.
I can't help thinking that the couple had an idea - we gave away our old one as our tuner had said it was on its last legs.

If you decide to go for another, it's quite in order to take your piano tuner with you. I did, and it saved me from a fate like yours.
    Best wishes :)
