Sounds like it could be a motherboard or power supply issue.
Try setting bios to failsafe default. If this works you may have to adjust some settings later.
Can you re-flash the bios next time you have it running ? Your current bios is on 1st post screen or you could use cpu-z to id motherboard and bios.
Can you swap out the psu ?
You're way above my level now mate. I haven't a baldy clue what you're talking about.0 -
In your bios settings will be an option to set default settings. There is usually the choice of failsafe settings and optimal settings. Remember to save and exit after any changes ,not just close/exit.
Can you try another power supply unit ?
CPU-Z is a free download prog which gives motherboard and other info. I've just read that you know the latest bios now on other thread.
Can you try with ps2 ,old type, mouse/keyboard ? Not major but worth a try if you already have them.0 -
Just tried to reboot into BIOS but missed it. Will give it a go tomorrow. Thanks for the advice.0

Already posted in your other thread, but I'm with spakker, check the psu by swapping with a known good'un.Move along, nothing to see.0

I wouldn't have a clue at remedying the problem in Windows, but these issues are, or were quite common in Linux.. It's usually to do with buggy BIOS/motherboard implementations of the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
The equipment I'm using at the moment all seems to conform and ACPI functionality works okay or, at least any ACPI bugs that did exist have been discovered and patched in the Linux kernel.
In the past, I just disabled ACPI functionality altogether in the BIOS when it didn't work properly. The OS-level power management from ACPI is much more useful on a laptop than a desktop machine, so I didn't miss it.0 -
Good tip. I've taken note of that.0

Some progress to report. Accessed the bios and corrected the PS2 issue which was preventing the keyboard and mouse from functioning in DOS. Have now run Seagate Tools and no faults were found on the disc. Still no improvement on the rebooting issue but will now try to disable ACPI and see what functionality I get.0

At last this issue has been resolved. For all those who tried to help but, like me were baffled by what the machine was doing - it was a hardware fault. Not, as you'd expect, the motherboard but a damaged USB2 card. Two ports were physically broken. On replacing the card today I immediately tried to reboot and the machine now does it quickly and smoothly.
It just goes to show you - computers, no matter how much you think you know about them, will always create problems to challenge your investigative skills.
Thanks to all who tried to help.0 -
