Loft insulation via walk-in surveyor?

I've just had a call from SIG. They said that my energy company had written to me and they were calling on behalf of them. We spoke on the doorstep beforeI finally let him in to look in the loft.
He said I had no insulation and went from it being 'free' to £199.
As a lone woman who doesn't do much (OK, any) DIY, I wasn't sure if that was a good deal so I said I'd have it, but that I would research it and get back to them
After reading this thread, I will be cancelling the VERY quick date they arranged and doing it myself!
That said, I did not feel pressurised or intimidated by them, but can understand how old people may need to be wary
I do wish they wouldn't masquerade as having been sent by my energy supplier though......:mad:0 -
My tenant has just been given info from this company and arranged a date for loft insulation. The literature says it is free if you are on benefits, which she is. It seems very clear on this. Has anyone experience of them under these circumstances?
Thanks.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

My experience echoes the above with regard to a door-knocking surveyor. Mine was very young man though, about 19 I reckon. Was like a dog with a bone and wouldnt go....
He came to the bit where he wanted to drill my wall cavity to check the measurement and I said no, I could tell him the measurements as we'd just done work on the house. (I'm also a property investor and used to doing work, not a numpty).
He said we'd get work free cause we get some benefits for my disabled son. He had no information pack though, and they promised to send one out, which I've never had. I booked the work in for a month ahead
I have had several phone calls at midday saying their contractors are free 'that afternoon' if I could let them in? Its never been convenient.
The work was booked in for Tuesday but I have cancelled it as I've read some not great things about this company. As I wouldnt provide another date they have cancelled me off the system.
I know its not in the spirt of this forum but i'd rather pay for this work. 2 and 2 did not add up with this company, don't know why, Just felt uneasy.
I think he signed some of my neighbours up on same night so I'll ask around............0 -
You can contact the energy savings trust; they will give you details of local approved companies who will come out at your request to survey your property, and some indication of whether you'd be eligible for free or reduced insulation.0

Had one of these bozos call a few months ago - our living space is all one floor up, with only the garage and hall at ground level, so I tend to open the window above the front door and (literally) talk down to anyone who offers to power-wash my monobloc, do tree work, or sell me loft insulation.
My house is barely 15 years old, and when I suggested to the bozo that the insulation was the same age, and perfectly adequate, his response was along the lines of -
"It needs to be done every 6 years, sir"
Yeah, right......0 -
My wife gets them calling every few months at teatime - we have a loft conversion which is clearly obvious from the newish roof tiles, velux windows and side dormer - yet they still want to come and have a look - they usually end up calling back later when I'm home for another door step refusal - even when I tell them its been done to building regs they still think they can put insulation in ! One of them saw my 3 yr old and said I'd get it free with under 5's - I think that was at the point I shut the door and left him there.0

Hi GG
My tenants got loft insulation done with SIG for free. They were very happy with the service.

Lots of good reasons on this thread for having a door chain and using it..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
