I think the OP listed that lifes pressures (which could be something which they do not want to state on a open forum!) AND moving house which is stressful in itself so I hardly think that they thought "other things were higher priorities". Moving house could have been because of spiralling debt (although the OP has not said that) or loss of a loved one or divorce.... we should not assume here perhaps! Its often not that something is put higher on a list of priorities, its needs and musts and a roof over your head is priority I would think.
Moving house does not stop you using the telephone for six months. Bereavement does not preclude you from writing letters for six months. If it did I would be utterly screwed. I mean, every year or so my tenancy would expire or whatever and I'd have to uninstall Microsoft Word and smash my phone up with a hammer. It'd be impractical at the very least.
Less sarcastically, I honestly cannot think of a single thing that would prevent someone from writing a letter or making a telephone call for a period of six months other than some kind of horrific illness, and as dunstonh said the FOS look sympathetically upon such cases anyway.
