Housemates Computers wasting power what can I do?
Grow a set and tell her to switch her computer off!

Some computers with massive graphic cards use far more than 300 watts, although I doubt this one does.
Why do they leave it on? I always turn mine off to save electricity and to stop it filling up with dust.0 -

Whilst a high end computer can use more than 300 watts when playing games etc, they will use far less than 300 watts when simply left on overnight - even without going to standby/sleep.0 -
True, but why leave it on all the time.
I must confess that I leave mine on all the time because I tend to use it in short bursts and I'm just far too impatient to wait for it to boot up each time I want to use it.
I do, however, recognise that this is costing me money and is not an environmentally friendly way of doing things - on my last PC I used to put it in standby mode when not in use and it would fire up quickly at the click of the mouse.
Unfortunately my current PC does not like coming out of standby mode (the receiver for the cordless keyboard and mouse doesn't seem to be powered when in this state) and pressing the power button to wake it up seems to just throw it into a state of confusion.
Not very 'green' at all I know but in the winter I console myself with the tenuous theory that the power being used is being mainly converted to heat and is thus being used to help keep the house warm rather than just being wasted.0
