If you're in a 1st floor flat and can smell old damp rotten wood in your bathroom you may soon find that your bathroom is on the ground floor. That will leave a nice big hole in your present flat which will allow the rest of it to air quite nicely ;)

You need to discover the cause of the smell in the bathroom and get the council onto it.

    It wouldn't surprise me!

I have a council inspector coming on Monday afternoon to check it out.

Hello everyone, sorry for the delayed response.

After looking yesterday at where the main smell is coming from I found two places. I live on a 1st floor flat and the man opposite me is disgusting and he smells! he has lived in his flat for 15 years and he smokes pipes and he has not changed his carpets and he has a smelly dog, his flat is bad, oil and brown windows from the pipe smoke that have not been cleaned and he seems to be a bit of a klepto. His personal hygiene is no better and he has bad B.O so when he comes in and out of his flat the smell from in is travels in to the main bit of the flats and that is probably one cause....I have two locks on my door, one on the handle and one above it but the holes are pretty big so I think the smell is coming through it and there is a small space on the side of the door letting the smell in too (I do clean out there with dettol but it stinks hours after)

Then I found another smell and it's coming from the boiler room in my bath room, the only way I can describe the smell it by is .. the smell of old damp rotten wood..

    What can I do.............

You could draught seal your door to reduce the air moving in from the hallway. Put a metal and rubber strip around the edges and something on the letterbox, plus open keyholes can usually have a sliding cover put on them too. It costs a bit to do a door properly, but you'd easily end up spending more on air fresheners sooner or later anyway.

As for the plug in air fresheners, they are apparently a common cause of house fires. No great surprise they've been catching fire really, they're very cheap mains voltage devices made in China, which tends to be quite bad enough, but they also come pre-filled with flammable solvent based gel. Maybe battery powered ones would be better?

I'd contact your landlord, if your a private renter I'd consider moving on (this guy on your floor may not be so easy to change) or if you are prepared to put up with it, ask for a reduction in rent as a sweetener to stay (and to pay for all the expensive draft excuders and air fresheners. The pipes alone would create enough of a bad smell!

I'd agree with payless about the bathroom: rotting wood is a warning sign and you should be careful, if its damp it could also create mould which itself can cause serious health problems.
