Cheap Plugin Air Freshers....

Last year I moved in to my own flat (council) and I managed to get it decorated well and I was given some nice carpet for my living room and I immediately paid £50 to get it cleaned properly, but the hall way has vinly flooring (looks like clickwood) ...
To cut a long story short...I clean my flat deeply with Dettol, I have tried bleach and Zeflora but I cannot get rid of the smell what accumulates hours just after cleaning, I have tried bi-carb etc and with no luck.
I have a small budget at the moment so does any one know where I could get a hold of some cheap plug ins? I have tried to gel freshers but they are useless........

It might help if you give an indication of what the smell is. Someone may help you get rid of it, and that will be far better than spending money on disguising it for the rest of your time there.
Is the smell in every room in your flat?
If you clean, then keep all the doors closed, does the smell appear in one room first, then spread to the other rooms?
Could it be that cleaning with bleach etc. doesn't actually get rid of the smell, but the smell of the cleaning products you use masks the smell for a few hours? If yes, then the things you clean aren't causing the smell, it's coming from somewhere else.
Could the smell be originating outside and finding it's way into your flat? Is there a dead cat under your floorboards?
Or a dead spuggie behind the wardrobe? Or a dead rat under the kitchen units?0 -
I used to live in a Hostle and had a similar thing. I can't say I ever got rid of the problem, I wasn't allowed to change or tear our the (what felt like) velcro carpets so ended up sprinking with heaps of talcom powder, leaving it to settle then hoovering up. As I say, it didn't get rid of the grimy smell which was probably as a result of ground-in dust dirt and dead skin cells over the years (carpet was apparently over 10 years old said hostle officer!) but did help a little. Also leaving the window as wide open as you can when your out (and when your in if you can stand it) to help the rooms air helped. I had a big issue with this as a wasps nest lived right outside but you can get netted curtains which can prevent wasps from getting inside, just make sure enough air can get in.
I do think though that its probably going to be in the flooring and walls and celing, (yes the celing) its likely to be dust and dirt which is within the dust and this ends up on the walls and etc within the building your in.0 -
Aldi do a plug-in with 2 refills which is a good bit cheaper than Airwick, Glade, etc. I bought the blue version - think it's supposed to be the sea or the ocean. Trouble is I can't stand the smell of it!0

B&q had a promo with a branded one (probably airwick) it was £3 for the plug in and 1 refill. and £3 for the refill on its own. alot cheaper than £9.50 in tesco though. Probably sold out though but staff werent completely arware of the offer so think its still marked up at original price0

If you look on the vouchers thread their's a new coupon for £2 for a AMBIPUR evolution3 which is £8 something but 1/2 price at the moment in Tesco. With the £2 voucher it works out at £2 instead of £8 and these do smell really nice. HTHBeware!!!! Glitching is addictive:rotfl:0

try washing your floors with Ariel the original one, I clean mny floors with this every now and again as I have a dog
my floors dont smell but I am paranoid about the smell of dog and find that this smells clean for quite a while, I just clean in between with Flash though.
i did clean a carpet with Ariel and a Vax and it came up great, soaked it by hand with a scrubbing brush and used the machine to suck it up
Asda have a few good deals on air fresheners at the moment and had the Air Wick reed fresheners for £4, fire brigade dont recommend those plug in ones as they can cause fires0 -
Also have a look in TKMaxx at reed diffusers. I have had some really good quality fragranced ones from their good selection. The Airwick ones are pretty good too at fragrancing a room if you find them on offer anywhere. The cheap diffusers aren't worth buying, may look pretty but the smell has faded within days."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0

Hello everyone, sorry for the delayed response.
After looking yesterday at where the main smell is coming from I found two places. I live on a 1st floor flat and the man opposite me is disgusting and he smells! he has lived in his flat for 15 years and he smokes pipes and he has not changed his carpets and he has a smelly dog, his flat is bad, oil and brown windows from the pipe smoke that have not been cleaned and he seems to be a bit of a klepto. His personal hygiene is no better and he has bad B.O so when he comes in and out of his flat the smell from in is travels in to the main bit of the flats and that is probably one cause....I have two locks on my door, one on the handle and one above it but the holes are pretty big so I think the smell is coming through it and there is a small space on the side of the door letting the smell in too (I do clean out there with dettol but it stinks hours after)
Then I found another smell and it's coming from the boiler room in my bath room, the only way I can describe the smell it by is .. the smell of old damp rotten wood..
What can I do.............0 -
For cheap nice smelling plug ins asda do a nice one called very berry that it lovely. The fresh cotton one is much more subtle but still nice. The sandalwood one is vile.
They are £1 each which is a great price. If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
If you're in a 1st floor flat and can smell old damp rotten wood in your bathroom you may soon find that your bathroom is on the ground floor. That will leave a nice big hole in your present flat which will allow the rest of it to air quite nicely
You need to discover the cause of the smell in the bathroom and get the council onto it.0
