Fast Food Old Style, any ideas?

Hello! The school hols are fast approaching and I have kids coming to stay who are obsessed with fast food. Unfortunatly my budget isn't going to stretch to takeaways everyday. Does anyone make copies of well known fast food meals like McDonalds, KFC etc?

I sometimes make KFC style fillet burgers by cutting a chicken breast in half and coating in breadcrumbs & pepper. I then cook those in the oven and lightly toast some rolls and add salad, cheese slices mayo and ketchup. f I want to make it into a tower burger then I just add a hash brown.

Any ideas?

Thanks

    Hi:idea:

Potato wedges are cheap and easy to make. Wash potatoes and remove any nasty bits and cut into wedges. Pop into a bowl with a couple of tablespoons of oil and some pepper, paprika or cayenne (any of these will do) and toss until equally covered. Bake on a non stick tray until they are soft in the middle and serve with a dip. My lot are as happy with tomato sauce or salad cream as any bought dip.

Melt a mars bar in the microwave and serve it with cut up fruit to dip (bananas and satsumas work well)

    Fast food and fun.

On treat nights when my kids are allowed to eat in front of the tv (not very often!) I do them potato wedges and chicken legs/drumsticks baked in the oven in a barbecue sauce. It goes down really well as they can use their fingers which they love. I got the recipe from doing a search on google but the main ingredient of the bbq sauce is tomato ketchup.

You can also smother the chicken in yoghurt before putting the breadcrumbs on and baking in the oven.

What about homemade burgers, noodles to make chow mein and hm curry's. Our naughtiest but favourite meal is chilli with nacho's smothered with cheese and baked in the oven, or cheese and bacon potato skins.

For homemade burgers I use 500g mince 1/2 an onion, some breadcrumbs some parsley if I have it and an egg yolk to bind. Although just seasooning some plain mince and shaping it into a patty should be fine.

Whatever you do/make, it might be an idea to make some food e.g.burgers up now and pop them in the freezer so they're all ready to be cooked 'fast'

    Pizza :)

We have a few threads you can browse for ideas, and in some of them there are suggestions on how you can get the kids involved in making thieir own! Well, you make the bases (scone mix rather than bread dough if you like), organise dishes of various toppings - and let the kids create their own.

    a) they have fun :)

    b) you can bet that they'll eat what they make :)

I personally wouldnt but they are my cousins and they are coming to stay. their parents let them eat whatever they want. I don't have time to re educate them on their eating habits however I want them to eat something!

Thanks for all your suggestions so far - I'm going to make up some burgers in advance - fabulous tip!

One way to make a really fab breadcrumb coating for chicken is to include lots of finely grated parmesan in the breadcrumbs. It makes SUCH a difference. Not very cheap I know, and maybe you don't want to "waste" it on your visitors
