Walnut or oak bedroom furniture?

Hi everyone :)

I'm buying some new bedroom furniture for my main bedroom, partly with eventually selling the house in mind and partly because I've just been on holiday and realised how mis-matched my room looks!

The room has 1 dark red wall which the bed is against and 3 cream coloured walls. The window frame is painted dark wood and has creamy white curtains. The carpet is sort of light beige.

I'm buying a bed frame, 2 bedside tables and a chest of drawers. I've got one of those white cotton wardrobes. I'm limited by budget to buying from Argos, and I'm struggling to decide between oak and walnut. I prefer dark wood with the red wall, the room is light too so I don't think it would be too dark, but the oak furniture looks more expensive (it is more expensive too!) and my boyfriend prefers the oak I think. Also I can't get an oak or walnut bed frame to match the furniture but I thought chocolate or caramel stained pine would fit in OK.

I just wondered what people's opinions are!

Thanks very much :)

My opinion is that lighter wood is more 'in' at the moment. Oak and beech seems to be preferable to walnut or mahogany. Guess it depends largely on the style and character of the house in general?

I bought walnut furniture for our bedroom and I love it, the mixmatch of dark and light so it doesn't look too dark. I would suggest a divan bed with a brown fabric headboard or cream to contrast against the red wall. I think spending money on new furniture and then having a bed frame which is dyed to fit in ok would spoil the whole effect.

Walnut every time for me. I agree with ellies angel though, if you have to save money somewhere a divan with a great headboard is a great idea.
