Our rental period and tenancy period differ. Is the last rental payment normally just calculated pro rata?

Yes. You work out the daily rate by multiplying the monthly rent by 12, then dividing by 365.

That's not how they calculated the rate when we moved in. It was pro rata for the month and unfortunately for us it was February.

I am tempted to calculate using full months rent - initial rent payment ;)
  • Hello everyone!

Update to the situation: we didn't move last time I asked for advice. Now we've found a new place and we would like to give our 1 month notice (still 1st of month the rent is paid on).

We will hand our notice in on 29th or 30th November for 1 calendar month notice (1 Dec - 31 Dec) and we will deliver a copy by email, hand and post (with proof, this one to go in post soonest).

Any suggestions on what we say? Something like we are giving our notice and we would be happy to allow viewings of our flat on x, x, and x days between this & this time? We want to ask for clarification on the leaving process - any tips?

    Thank you!
:A Thanks to all the lovely people who contribute their advice! :A
  • "We are giving our required one month's notice and intend to vacate the property on X date. We would be grateful if you could contact us to arrange a mutually convenient time and date to carry out the check-out inspection. Please be assured that we fully intend to be as flexible as possible with regard to viewings by prospective tenants and are offering you X days of the week between a and b o'clock in the first instance."
  • Thank you, BitterAndTwisted! That is perfect and very helpful after a few days of house hunting, which has left my head a bit numb! Cheers!
