I visited a friend tonight, who asked me to look at her email account, as she couldn't get it to work.
She has a talkgas account and the other day her talkgas home page said she need to upgrade the server! After doing so the home page now redirects to https://www.house.co.uk (british gas website) and the dial up connection is with Supanet.com. No sign or mention of talkgas not existing anymore and the email account hasn't been transfered to supanet.
She's not too worried as she is going to install broadband shortly! And will get a new email address with that!
Just wanted to know why talkgas seems to have disapeared.
Cheers

I'm not sure what's happened but it looks like they've shut it down. As it was linked to British Gas Communications phone package it might be worth calling them to see what's happened.
My guess is they're cutting costs and ditching customer benefits to maintain thier ridiculous profit margin and shareholder bonuses!
You could try emailing support@talkgas.net . Although the portal for users seems to be closed, this address will bounce to a department within British Gas Communications or Supanet so you should get a reply.
The signup portal is still available online at http://signup.talkgas.net/ and there is an option to "revalidate" an account.
The domain https://www.talkgas.net is still licensed to CENTRICA PLC. It's due to expire on 13th April 2007. The contact details for the domain (results of a WHOIS search) are:

I think i'd hassle Chris Johnson (or whoever has replaced him since the domain was registered in 2000) for an explanation.
Hope this is of some use.0 -
Thanks, I'll pass that info on to my friend!

They have been taken over by Talk Talk ( I think)
She should have email about the switch over .. I guess she may have deleted it thinking it was spamWhile I breathe.... I hope0 -
Had a similar problem. Phoned British Gas, who put me on to Carphone Warehouse in India, and was assured that I could not access this email as the service was taken down, as advised in an email. I was never sent an email(too)! Being an ex-employee I am livid at this kind of treatment and have yet to get a reply from emails sent to Centrica and the Carphone Warehouse.
However I did discover that Supanet provided the service and someone with a similar problem has found what may be a solution.
Try changing your mail server settings to:
pop.supanet.com and smtp.supanet.com
Use your original user name and password as used with the talkgas webmail.
Worked for me and got the "deleted" emails.
Don't they (British Gas/Centrica) just love being in control - not!0 -
