Thermo Mixer Shower problem

I have a Triton ALAYA Thermo Mixer Shower operated by a Stuart & Turner 1.8 bar twin Showermate Pump.
Invariably the Shower fails to start (the pump doesn't kick in) until the hand unit is removed from the shower and held near the floor of the shower.
Both Triton and Stuart & Turner say the 30 cm head is OK - Triton say the flow is weak and possibly a negative head pump (another £350+) may work and Stuart & Turner say the Shower valves could be sticky although Triton say they are OK.
I'm also told removing the non-return valves from the Shower will do the trick.
Any advice would be appreciated - Thanks
