Safety Deposit Boxes

I have some valuables that we would like to put away.
Does anyone know if safety deposit boxes are a good way to keep safe gold jewellery etc.
How much does it cost and is there any bargins to be had?
Would it be better to buy our own safe, but how secure are home safes?

TSB do padded envelopes for about £15 per year.
I think there will be waiting lists for deposit boxes in most banks
You can pick up a home safe for about £15.0
