Copy home VHS video to computer?

Options
Hi,

We have some old holiday home video VHS tapes we'd like to transfer/save to the PC (with the option of later burning them to DVD, though this isn't necessary at the moment) and are wondering if anyone could guide us as to how do this.

We have an old VHS player - please can anyone advise how we can do this, what extra equipment etc., we need to link the VHS to the computer and start the transfer? (We don't have a DVD recorder).

Also is special software needed on the PC first and if so is this available anywhere as a free download from filehippo or similar?

Many thx!

    This is one option

If you click the link for the scart adapter switchable plug to socket, there is another link for one called easycap, cheaper but not good with windows 7

If you post back when you want to burn them to disc, someone will know what is available for that

Santer's right, get one of those devices, try your first tape, ask back here if there are any problems (most of those devices are lacking a bit in clear instructions but are simple to use once you're rolling)

Many p.c.'s have Windows Movie Maker, installed this will transfer the footage from your camcorder to HDD,

I bought a video player/ dvd recorder combo from Ebay for £7.63. I searched locally to save on p+p. Might be worth a shot... it means that it won't tie up your pc for hours at a time.

You will need a recorder device and some software if you want to DIY. check google and amazon for the relevent products.

If you dont want to do it yourself there are video shops that do this for a fee per tape. Although they can be abit expensive, its saves ALOT of time and it will ensure that the best possible copies will be made from the VHS tapes.

£2 for a USB video capture dongle on ebay.. Your video player would need to have composite or s-video output.

I wonder if in ten years time we will be all asking how to transfer all our DVD's to the next generation of "Micro Entertainment Disks" © ;o))))
