Canceling Tax Disc?
Hey.
I've just noticed on the spare car the tax runs out on the 31st of June. Seen as Monday is a bank holiday, is it possible to bring the tax disc in to perhaps, a post office on Tuesday (31st May) and cancel it on the spot? If so, that means I get a refund for the remaining month not used, correct?
Thanks!

Info here;-
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012526You need to post your refund application before the first day of the month that you are claiming the refund. You also need to tell DVLA why you are applying for a refund.
andHow to apply for a refund
You can apply for a refund of vehicle tax with a tax disc, or without one if it has been lost or stolen.
Application with a tax disc
To apply for your refund, fill in and download the form V14 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when you have the tax disc’. Once you have filled in the form online you should:
print and sign your form
attach your tax disc
post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AL
There is an online step by step guide available to help you with this.
Complete and download online – ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax’ – V14Opens new window
You can also download a copy of the form which you can complete by hand using the link below. Please ensure to sign the form and attach your tax disc before you send it to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AL. The form is also available from a tax issuing Post Office®.I am a mortgage broker. You should note that this site doesn't check my status as a Mortgage Adviser, so you need to take my word for it. The Post Office will only give tou a claim form, rather than a pro rata money back. You need to make sure it is posted early on in the day to make sure it gets a postmark of the 31st May...0

If you to the post office tomorrow (tues) ask for a V14 form, send it there and then and ask for a certificate of posting, you might get june back, or take it to the local DVLA. If theres every a mistake with your Tax disc when getting from the post office, take it back to the same post office on the same day and you'll be able to get a refund0

Download the V14 here in case your local post office doesn't have any

Haha! It's actually the 7th month (July) so that means I'd get a whopping £40 refund! Yaa!0 -
I handed my form and tax disc to my nearest local DVLA office which is 40miles away, not an option for most but it's on my commuter route.
They give you a receipt to prove you've handed it to the DVLA and also stamp the form which the local office puts in their internal mail to where ever it's properly processed.
Think this is the only way to guarentee what refund you get0 -
be aware dvla can lose your sorn
last year i attached one to a v5c application
not got it they said
i then did it online
not received they said
i then complained and that was the start of the investigations
took another 6 weeks for them to agree it was originally attached to v5c application
good thing was they confirmed all the times and dates i had been in correspondence with them
thankfully my conversations and stamps made their ship tighter but theres always a cobble might squeeze through unoticed
so be aware that once you cash the tax you need to sorn
i know its been mentioned but £40 back versus an $80 fine isnt nice:rotfl:0 -
Alright, thanks for all the replies. That means I need to SORN the car first in order to hand in the tax disc? If so, is SORNing online instant? So steps to take are:
1) Sorn?
2) Fill in V14 form and hand in along with tax disc at post office
3) make sure I get them to stamp and give me a receipt.
Is this a guaranteed was of getting the 2 month refund? I always thought by surrendering your tax disc to the post office was all you had to do, and would get the cash over the counter. (thought wrong...)
Thanks!0
