Protecting external pipes from frost

Hi

I am moving a to a new (to me ) house on friday and the outside tap has a external copper pipe of about 50cm exposed.

What would be the best way to protect this from frost?

Thanks in advance

  • Isolate the pipework inside the house and drain it down for the winter.
  • I wrap a long piece of bubble wrap around my pipe & tap during the winter. It's worked fine, but my pipe isn't as long as yours. You could try some of that pipe insulating foam stuff, comes in about 2m lengths, is hollow, you split it down the length & pop the pipe in. You could use duck (duct?) tape to hold it closed. Or lots & lots of bubble wrap!!! ;):D :rotfl:

    Hello mitchb

We do the same things as suggested by Phil_L and never enough.............the grey foam insulation stuff.;)

Good luck with your house move.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Thought about the grey foam but was unsure that this would be sufficent, you have given me confidence to try this.

Definetly wont be using the tap until the summer so will drain it as well.

    Thanks again
