working tax credits overpayment

Options
Hi
Can anyone advise me ? I was unemployed from Feb to Nov 2007. We claimed working family tax credit. I got another job in Nov 2007 and wrote and told them. Now, nearly 4 years later, we've received a bill for £750, which they claim they over paid us.

We don't have this money, and I don't even want to pay it off monthly, as we told them I'd got another job.

What can we do ?

If you were unemployed from feb to nov but getting working tax credit then thats your problem - you wernt supposed to get it and thats why you have to pay it back - you might not want to but you will have to. Thats just the way it is.

i suppose you got wtc because your partner was working?

the tax credits are worked out over a years period (April to April) so if you were unemployed til November, the tax credits would have been worked out on your income to the following April.
Your income probably increased, meaning that for the months you received the tax credits, the amount was too high as your income increased.

    if that makes sense lol

Not to sound like I'm having a go but if the tax credits should have stopped or go down but they were still going in your bank as normal why didn't YOU stop it to avoid a large overpayment bill ? Try fighting it, if you are in the right I hope you win :) good luck
