Windows - problems with fitter

Options
Can anyone help.

I have a few problems with a window fitter.

I was silly and found myself pushed into accepting work to be done, same old story (can give you a discount if you sign now and have them fitted next week!)

So long story cut short, I showed the window chap what I wanted my windows to be like. Showed him the one I liked in the road and the one I didn't want it to be like. He then did the usual drawings which I have and I paid the deposit of 30%.

There are several problems which are now arising, such as the windows aren't as I wanted, they are like the ones I said I didn't want them to be like, plus other snagging issues.

What if anything can I do to get him to rectify the issues? Also what rights do I have about payment, he says he wants the money at the beginning of the last day of fitting, but because of the snags I have, I want the issues sorted out before I pay.

He also wants payment by cash, won't accept cheque or credit card.

Any help?

I assume the drawings you have show the windows you like?
If so i would show the fitter the drawings you have and explain that he is fitting the wrong ones!!!
  • The problem with the drawings are they are so small, that it is hard to call between the two of us.

The point is I showed him two houses in our street. One is what I wanted, the other is what I wanted to avoid, and he has managed to do the reverse plus some other issues, but when I raised it with him he got really nasty on the phone.

Not sure if I have any come back, not sure what to do

Sounds like you've picked a right cowboy here.

First contact your local Trading Standards to see what advice they can offer (find them in your local phone book). Whatever you do, DO NOT PAY THE BALANCE IN CASH. If this goes any further, cash payments are too easy to deny receiving. Any respectable window company/fitter would be happy to leave the final payment until the job is finished, it smells fishy that he wants payment before the end of the job and in cash. If he is genuine, a cheque at the very least should be OK.

What is he doing about your part L certificate for the windows? This is required by law now. Either he must be FENSA registered (and your job registered with them so they can issue the certificate), or you need to apply to (and pay for) your local council building regs people to come around and inspect the windows to make sure they comply with this building regulation. This is very important, if you sell the house, you will need to be able to produce this certificate and may face problems if you can't.
