Much of the sago crop was wiped out by the 2004 Tsunami, it will be a good few years before they can supply it.

Dare I admit I have never had either tapioca or sago? My gran didn't like them so never cooked them, nor mum, nor me...

Not that I am curious enough to try it. *wimps out*

I make tapioca pudding from the dried tapioca, but I also use it, ground to a flour, to thicken soups.
If I'm over the hill, where was the top?

There may well be a divine force at work.. I once had a tiny spoonful of sago and (I can feel my throat closing already) I didn't even get to swallow it before I had thrown my whole lunch and possibly breakfast as well.. I had never in my entire life come across anything so disgusting.. I have not touched anything remotely similar in 25 years since so traumatic was my experience.. for the first 10 years I could make myself spontaneously sick by thinking about it!!!!!

We were literally MADE to eat this at school with a couple of prunes on the top. I couldnot stand it, we called it frogspawn too. The thought of sago still makes me feel sick.

Ps Mum remembers finding prunes in my pinifore dress pocket.

  • Dried sago pearls are available from Asian stores.

My friend brought me a packet of Sago pappadums, which when fried in oil, remotely resemble prawn crackers without the flavouring.

Old thread resurection I know, but I came across the thread whilst trying to find out who might sell it in tins. We also used to get it served for school dinners and I remember you could buy it back then in tins. I loved it, both at school and later in tins. I actually preferred it to rice pudding and yes, we also called it 'frogspawn'.
This site seems to sell it, but a creamed version. I suspect 'creamed' means the sago is finely ground to flour before cooking?
