Can't update to SP3

Well having been unable to get anywhere trying to sort out my E:\ drive not accessible, incorrect function problem I did try to update my XP from SP2 to SP3. But that's failed. I've had the little yellow thing saying I have updates available for ages but each time I try to install them it just says failed. Tried again today - still no better.
I have run avast and it found 2 infections both related to some Java files - I moved themt o chest, restarted PC but still can't update to SP3.
Anybody got any ideas before I scream?

Try installing sp3 in safemode.
