Engine mounts - costly?

I have a Xsara Picasso (2001) and over the past couple of months it has developed an intermittent clunk when pulling away in 1st gear. It doesn't always happen - and if I pull away VERY gradually it is fine. If I pull away faster (i.e. nipping out of a junction) it happens more.

The clunk sounds like it's coming from right in front of me.

I've read up and it could be a number of things, but a common one on the Picasso is the engine mounts (I believe there is one on each side?). It has done 60k miles and is 10 years old, so quite plausible really.

Is this an expensive job? I can't imagine parts would be that expensive (£30 each side?) but is there a lot of labour involved?

Not sure whether to delay or just bite the bullet.

if its the hdi it could be the crankshaft pulley
get advice before getting parts changed nilly willy:)
  • I've always found the HDI pulleys to clack constantly if they are breaking up.

Wishbone or right hand engine mount it'll be.. Xsaras in work have an addiction to Wishbones.

i find they only clack when worked but willing to stand down on this one:cool:
  • They sound like one of idler/Tensioner pulleys breaking down when they're breaking up

They tend to rattle more when cold but last one I seen was constantly noisy 99 Hdi 90 Xsara with 190k on her.... Usually theres a orangish dust around the Bottom pulley where they're breaking up...

    This isn't the HDi. It's a 2001 SX 1.8 petrol.

Anything I can visually check before going into a garage to give me a head start? You're right, don't want to start changing parts willy nilly ...
  • HDi lol

Either Engine will be moving round whilst some one else revs it or Jack it up and the Wishbones will have play in..

Just make sure the exhaust shield hasn't come adrift and is catching the exhaust, seems quite common on french cars and can sound much more serious than it is. ;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
