Natwest current account

Hi there,

Basically, I have an slightly chequered credit history, though no CCJs. I had a Step account for six years, and six months ago this was finally upgraded to a current plus account. However, I only got a Solo card with it, and I wondered how long I'd have to wait until I'd be eligible for a Servicecard? I understand that there's no external credit check required, just that the computer system recommends one?

I'm not sure if it makes any difference, but last month I was offered a £2k overdraft facility, though I only accepted £1k of it. My salary of approx £35k is paid in directly by BACS.

One final question, would it make any difference if I upgraded my accout i.e. would I automatically get a Servicecard with an Advantage Gold account?

People have given great advice before, including to ask the bank, but I just wondered if anyone had any insights into how the NW computer works :D

Thanks,

J

  • I'm a bit puzzled by this, if they are willing to offer you a £2k overdraft I don't see why they won't give you a proper debit card.

I doubt upgrading to Advantage Gold would make much difference and the account is a complete rip off.

  • I agree, a bit puzzling. The only rationale I can think of is that with an overdraft they can still control the credit they give me, by preventing me from exceeding the limit, but with a full debit card I could max out the overdraft, and then write and guarantee a load of cheques.

Still, you'd think that from a risk perspective if they're happy to risk a £2k overdraft, they'd be happy to risk me writing cheques as well. Or give me the card without an overdraft.
  • I'm in a similar situation, albeit without the chequered credit history (I'm a student and don't have any regular income!).

NatWest have given me a £1400 overdraft on my currentplus account (in addition to the £1250 interest-free OD on my student account). I have a maestro servicecard on my student account but a solo card on the current plus.

What I've been led to believe is that you have to apply for a servicecard in-branch, as they won't do it automatically.

Don't bother "upgrading" to Advantage Gold - its definitely not worth it!
