Microwave Motherboard

Sharp Microwave (Combi) R-959M. Only 14 months old. Display panel failure, could cost £140 to repair (more than half original purchase price). Has anyone experience of this type of fault, had a better quote, or managed to get this paid for by supplier or manufacturer, beyond 12 months 'guaruntee' period? Many thanks:eek:

If it's just 2 months outside of the g-tee i'd send a letter direct to Sharp customer services (not who you bought it from). Not a nasty letter, a nice one just saying how you are disappointed and you've got loads of other Sharp products in your house ;)

Its 15 mins on the PC and a second class stamp.

If they won't replace it you may get some vouchers. Good luck

My sharp display started to go after 18 months getting faint and partsof numbers missing. When you look on the net it is very common for sharp microwave displays to fail,I carry on using mine and just count the beeps when i set a time .Not worth repairing due to cost

Under the sale of goods act your contract is with the retailer so I would contact the retailer. Don't expect them to be helpful from the outset but if you are willing to persevere you may get some joy. I have had success with an AEG washing machine and BEKO dishwasher out of guarantee. Even with John Lewis (the washing machine) the first response was it's out of guarantee (broke after about 27 months with 2 year guarantee) and they told me to speak to the manufacturer - I persevered saying that my contract is with John Lewis and I ended up with a new machine with a 5 year warranty.

Under the sale of goods act an item is supposed to last a reasonable period of time if not abused. Even if you are successful under the SOGA you are not necessarily entitled to a new machine or refund as money can be deducted for the use you have had so you might end up with a contribution to a new product - I would expect a significant contribution in your case as I think it is reasonable for a £140 microwave to last 4 or 5 years assuming it hasn't been abused.

I would also still write to the manufacturer as advised as in the case of the dishwasher I contacted the retailer and BEKO and BEKO sent someone around straight away to repair - I think the dishwasher was about 15 months old with a 1 year guarantee - it was a significant repair with the wiring loom replaced.
  • Thanks to all who sent helpful replies re my microwave display panel query. I've tried contacting supplier, Curry's, no joy so far (but it was lunch time - when call centre staff are under pressure and have rumbling tummies). Will try Sharp directly, failing that muddle on. I'll get some interesting results trying to use the combi facility with no diplay panel (am I microwaving and grilling, or am I grilling and oven baking my dinner?!) ;)

Sharp is a horrible company for customer services.. I once tried to get them to repair my Sharp minidisc player. It was only a couple of months old. Nevertheless, there was no chance of budging them. Sharp was adamant that the deck had failed due to misuse. I had no way of proving otherwise. Sharp retained the deck in lieu of inspection costs. In its correspondence to me denying that the deck had a design fault, the Sharp-authorised repair centre enclosed a list of repaired equipment it had for sale. I was invited to buy a replacement deck from that list.. I got the feeling that in the dueness of time, my minidisc player would no doubt make that list itself. That was 10 years ago. Once bitten, twice shy. I would never buy Sharp products again.

Under the SOGA if something goes faulty within 6 months it is for the retailer to prove misuse and not the purchaser. After 6 months the onus is on the purchaser. I'm guessing that ultimately if a retailer refuses to comply you would have to take them to the small claims court and many people wouldn't bother.
