More bay tree troubles.
My small bay in a pot appeared to have survived the winter with some die back which I pruned off. It's now shooting from the bottom but appears to have more die back going on with the existing top shoots. I noticed yesterday that on the bottom of the main stem but spreading upwards is white patches of gunk which is very sticky and gluey to the touch. Any ideas, and could the newer die back be related to this rather than the earlier cold weather?

If it is fluffy like tiny bits of cotton wool, then somewhat unusually then it sounds like Woolly Aphids or Mealy bugs and should be sprayed with an appropriate insecticide. If it is as described slimy then it sounds like some kind of fungal infection and you should spray with a wide spectrum fungicide. My Mind wanders, if found please return.0

Scale insects give off this sort of discharge and they love bay trees.
You'll need an insecticide (I have a vague recollection of white spirit or meths on cotton wool dabbed on them being effective, but can't remember the details - hopefully someone else can do so!)0 -
Anything cheap I might already have in the house would be good to save me going out and buying stuff. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Yes, it's definitely scale insects, little blighters. I've done a quick google and apparently I can't use white spirit, but meths should be ok. Or alcohol, but I have far better uses for my gin than sloshing it on a bay tree! All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Another question - if I want to use my bay leaves in cooking is there anything I can use to clear the scale insects that I won't poison myself with?

Our bay tree that is at least 35 foot tall (!) is dying back very slowly. The leaves are drying out and turning brown. Any thoughts please? Will take a good look at it again tomorrow. We do not want to lose it because it protects the house from the wind. Might ask an expert from a local Uni to take a look at it.0

Just checked our bay tree and most of the leaves have died, but the good news is that there is a lot of re-growth. It's going to survive I think.0
