BCG - I was going to make the comment about this being a strange thread! Why did the OP wait so long to put in about her friend's family circumstances and this being why she needed time off? Is the the friend happy that her private family circumstances are being posted on a public thread for all to see?

All of this could be solved one way or the other if the OP's friend simply discussed the situation with her line manager. If flexi-time or additional remote working is a possibility, all well and good. If not, then it is up to the friend to decide whether or not she wishes to stay on or seek alternative work.

Mischa8 - I am sure you are raising these questions with the best intentions for your friend. However, I wonder if she would be 100% happy that she is becoming the unwitting subject of several pages-worth of discussion on a public forum?

Whatever happens, good luck to her, and to you. x

Yes, but her needing time off for family AFAIK has been sorted out and authorised AS A SEPARATE POINT from her lateness.

I agree - I should have maybe pointed this out earlier but i didn't see it had any bearing, and I still don't. I do feel her previous colleague and manager treated her unfairly - she agrees this too.

As to her becoming the discussion of a forum, she actually asked me to post here on her behalf and gave full rein for me to do so. I'll go back to her with responses but all in all I feel it's a joke here. Some posters have been helpful, some have totally jumped on me when I dare to raise (and sorry it DOES go on in this day and age) the possibility she may be discriminated in some way.

I think some posters here are living in complete cloud cuckoo land if they don't think discrimination goes on.

Isn't amazing how you and the employment lawyer Sar_El both comment here?! All I can say is you do not know my friend nor her situation.\

why on earth would I make this up?! I am not a troll and this is not an imagined situation.

Yes, I withheld some info and yes maybe I wasn't clear as I should have been or what I wanted from here but for someone to think this is made up for fun is insulting to my friend TBH. But whatever.

Your thinking out loud is becoming very confusing. First it was possibly discrimination because her lateness was brought up at appraisals - although I acknowldege that it was now "and aside". And now it's about time of for caring responsibilities and disability, which you have never mentioned at all before and has nothing to do with being late due to traffic, snow, etc. - and which she may not even have asked for or been refused.

You may take as much umbrage as you like - my responses to you have been polite, unlike your responses to people, in which you have been rather intolerant and childish (the *I am taking my bat and ball home and not posting anymore because I don't like the answers" - although I notice that you haven't.)

But feel free to muse away. I shall be elsewhere dealing with real and not imagined slights.

Didn't you see my comments about her work NOT HAVING A PROBLEM with her taking time off for her mother etc? Because that was meant as a comment and not an attack on her company.

To be honest with you Sar_El. Your attitude to me has I am sorry to say been condescending and patronising as in 'my charity/pro bono work I do here'. No-one is ASKING you to do this, you are merely doing this unpaid. You make yourself sound like Lady Bountiful and the way you spoke to me about being late for court etc implies to myself and others that we really don't know how the world works.

Any respect I had for you before has gone. Oh and I am entitled to reply to comments even after I say I won't post anymore. You are the person here attacking me one moment for being childlike. Where have I attacked you? I actually in my previous post to you was trying to accord you respect.

Actually if you read in my posts to people who have BOTHERED TO READ rather than jump on my sexist/racist wonderings I have thanked them and replied in kind to them.

What a strange thread - it seems to be all over the place. The only thing that stands out is that the OP's friend wants flexi time but for some reason hasn't asked or company hasn't given it. I don't understand why she would want to look for another job either - only problem with this one seems to be company wants her to be at work at 9 am - or have I missed something? I work a 5 minute drive away from work with a 9 am start - I am in at 8.30 am every morning and so are most of my colleagues. I just like to get a head start on the day - don't have to do this of course but this is my choice so wouldn't expect company to pay me for this as they haven't asked me to do this. Really don't get the problem - company has stated they want her to be there by 9 am which is her normal working hours start time. Surely she has raised the flexi time issue in the past if she has been pulled up on this in an appraisal? Sounds like company don't do flexi time and OP's friend wants flexi time?

She wants to look for another job mostly because she is not happy (see previous manager and colleague issue). I think it is a culmination of things and the 'working on time' has brought it to a head. I have no idea if she has raised the flexi time issue and it has been refused.

because you are paid on results not on timekeeping.

From what she's told me, YES results are what count in her role and how well she audits etc. The timekeeping appears to be an aside, although a valid one in her company's eyes.

She has plenty of scope if she wants to as I said before to work from home but she prefers to be in the office and the 'thick of it'.

What is amazing about two different posters commenting?

You started the thread off by talking crap and you are ending it by talking crap - it's the only thing you have been consistent with.

Sar_El is obviously experienced in what he/she talks about.

Just as a final point here (though why I bother I don't know).

I saw my friend last Friday. She confirmed to me that they weren't keen on flexi-time in her company e.g. her starting later. So that was the end of that.

She then went on to tell me (after I asked her about racism there) not in a veiled or direct 'are/have they been racist towards you?' way that yes, she did believe they were racist but not badly so, just making comments about "Chinkies" and "going for a Chinese" in reference to "Chinkies".

The final thing she mentioned to me was - recently there's been a major mess up with her having tax deducted from her twice last month, half her salary, she had to go to payroll to get an advance on her wages otherwise her direct debits etc would not go out on time etc. She used the vast majority of her savings to pay for decorating etc on her mum's new house which she's just bought for her mum (various ways one can do this, she's looking to rent out or sell the flat her mum and brother DID live in before they moved to the house recently). When she brought this up with her manager he said "oh is this something to do eg tax wise with the buy to lets you have?" - she directly implied from this (she told me and my friend) that from his attitude and tone that he didn't think she could afford as a black lady to buy/have buy to let property portfolios.

Either way - she's not going to bring any race/sexism card against them but nor ask for further time allowances when she starts/finishes work.

Oh - and to sort of get her company back (she isn't sure whether her monthly tax mess up - see above) was as a result of the tax people or her HR/Payroll, has now asked and has been given permission to audit HR dept, so she can spot mistakes or be extra strict with them, whatever auditors do.

I'm only sorry I brought this up here to be accused of lying. Anyone who does want info please email me here.

Just to quote one final thing here - I did NOT MENTION BEFOREHAND she had never asked for time off. I did not say she HAD NEVER asked for time off EVER!

I am NOT a troll. I think you're a totally despicable person whom I would hate to meet IRL and would NEVER engage legally. HTH
