    OR, Get a Mac!

What you mean is OR, install Linux.;)

PS I would never pay for security

Is that the online renewal price?-if so Norton have changed their pricing recently!
But how do you know if it's worked well? If it's allowed infection without detection then you will be none the wiser. Not all malware is 'in your face'-the worst sort just sits there in the background doing it's damage undetected.
Run MBAM on a quick scan and the odds are it'll find quite a few things that Norton has missed.
Though I'll accept that the 2010/11 versions do seem to be better.
MB: Kaspersky Internet Security is free (3 licence edn) if you use Barclays online banking-by far the best option if you do.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just uninstall the old one first and then install the new one from the CD. I've already bought it now so I don't want to switch to a free one at this time. I run a malwarebytes scan regularly just in case it missed anything.

If you've not changed the default settings on your online account for the old version, then it'll auto-renew and bill your credit card anyway.
MBAM (free edn) is only an on-demand scanner. Use Avira, Avast or MSE for free, or Kaspersky for a commercial AV program.

That worried me then! I just checked my Norton Account and they don't have my card details. I've only ever bought it from a shop so hopefully that won't happen. I wouldn't want them auto renew it. I got a better deal buying it new.

Purchase it from a store it is cheaper then renewing it. Just make sure you don't have auto renew on.

To those saying use something else / norton is bloat / buy a mac.
You are totally unhelpful and your only experience with Norton is from 2007/8 where it was a terrible piece of muck. The OP wanted advice on best way to renew, In my opinion Norton is one of the bests (along with Kaspersky) and runs like a dream.

Some people don't like change or know a piece of software and like the features.

    Anyway, buy from a store.

Thanks CoolHotCold. I bought it from a store and I'm pleased with the deal. The 2010 version has run well on my computer so I'm hoping the new one will be the same.

I'm confused now though, after reading online it seems that most people have updated to 2011 for free and then just added their new key. So how do you update to 2011 for free? It sounds easier than uninstalling everything. I did get a message once about updating a while ago but it hasn't appeared since. Would using the check for latest version work? I haven't updated online before and don't know what to do now.

    Is it cleverly worded?

Get the latest version now! As a Norton subscription customer, you deserve the most current protection available. With your current paid subscription, you are entitled to download the latest version of your Norton product during your service period. It's safe, easy, secure, and provides the latest features and performance improvements.

Will it ask you to renew when the service period is up?

If it does, could I then put the new code that's on the CD I bought in? I just thought updating sounded easier than uninstalling everything.

I would update it from their site

If it asks you to renew when you would have anyway, then you could uninstall it then load from the CD you have

If it does not ask you and runs for a year, I would expect you could still use the CD when it next asked you to renew
