I did not know that from the very begining! I gave her the right info and the money came week ealier then the notice! Then, I have realised she did it wrong!

So once you knew it was wrong, you contacted them and arranged a repayment plan?
    Gone ... or have I?

I wasn't 'having a go at you', I just think that with matters such as this, it's rare for them to write the sum off, they may not request the return immediately, but it will usually only be a matter of time before they do, and it is also very rare that they will accept the fact that it was their error as a defence, and that you should bear that in mind before spending it, that's the only point i was trying to make.

I doubt that you matter enough to the advisor for them to screw up your claim on purpose.

I don't see why you are getting so wound up. If you get an overpayment notice, check that it is correct and arrange to repay it. Not difficult?

I think you should really read the original post first. I didnt ask what to do if I get the overpayment notice, did I?

I do understand what you're saying, and I must admit that i too would probably be tempted, we're only human after all, but I'm afraid that I would just pay it back, as I wouldn't want all of the stress and hassle that is bound to follow.

Well yes. But I'm not sure it's as simple as "being tempted not to pay it back", though I should have explained that there was no point in my doing anything but waiting to see what happened, as I pay by variable dd. Sending them a cheque would have messed things up. I wasn't "tempted not to pay", I was one of many customers suddenly landed with a massive bill because British Gas blundered.

In the event, they took the thousand-plus pounds out of my bank account with almost no notice. I did manage to get them to repay it, helped by the person who'd sent me the letter about it. We started discussing a repayment schedule... then I got a massive bill on top of that, made a fuss... and it turned out I had never owed them the money, their error was the other way around: they had overcharged my mother -- who'd paid by monthly fixed dd -- and then me, for ages. They owed me several thousand, and finally paid it.

I have often wondered whether some of the other customers British Gas got massive amounts of money from then, didn't in fact owe it.

Though the OP isn't in that situation, I rather think there's no point in him just sending a cheque, either.

And there's still nothing wrong with hoping....
