Re: XP SERVICE PACK 2: FREE CD DELIVERED

Options
There was a report in The Times recently that this Service Pack was causing chaos when installed (conflicts with other software, I think?) Has anyone used the website download of this Pack and are we sure it is now safe to use? Many thanks.

WARNING - Re my comments above, there is a parallel thread running on the FREEBIES page where people are discussing some of the horrors. I suggest you read this before you order the Service Pack.
  • The Horrors that is likely mentioned will be more for business users where they will be sharing resources etc,

If you are running XP and MS office you should not have any problems, anyway the thing that causes the most grieve is the Firewall that is turned on by default.

And is really easy to turn off on first boot.

Microsoft has published a list of software that has got
problems after you load SP2 and what needs to be done
    (more like what needs doing)
  • Here is the list provided by Microsoft on applications that have problems. And cause of problems 75% is due to the firewall that can be turned of on first boot very easily. You will also notice all apps referred to is for
corporate networks (symantec av corporate .. this problem again is only the firewall abd is only when server wants to update the user side) If you are usure
about any application you use just ring the vendor and they will have tested their software with SP2

If you run a standard home pc with office etc it is well worth the load.

Anyway you could use it as a coaster if you change your mind when you get it !! :)

Ordering the cd does not load it onto your pc anyway.
any Microsoft does not force you to install it when you order the free cd.

This post is purely for home users that have modem dialup wanting to load sp2, so they do not have to download a min of 76mb up to 260mb (the network administrators installation version)
