Insurance help

A couple of days ago we had to cancel a family holiday because my mother-in-law was taken into hospital. She spent four days in hospital and was released the night before we were due to fly, my wife is staying with her for a few days until she feels better (she's 74 and lives on her own)
What I would like to know is, are the insurance company likely to pay even though she was discharged before we were due to fly, and will they pay for the whole party or just my wife?
I would really appreciate a swift reply from somebody knowledgable in this subject as we are thinking of getting a last minute deal this weekend with the proceeds of the claim
Cheers

    Hi there,

Unfortunatly it's a question you need to ask the insurance company, as there are so many variables. Each company will have varying degrees of cover, and will even come down to why your MIL was in hospital, if it was something to do with a condition she already had / has had in the past, if it was a condition that was notified to the insurance company prior to purchasing the policy etc etc etc......

Sorry it's not a straight forward answer, but in reality you need to speak with your insurers, as they will be able to give the answers based on the information you have provided to them.

I really hope you are covered, and hope the MIL recovers well.

    Regards

  • Hi Dave
Unfortunately my insurance company's (AMEX) offices are closed today, which has left us with this dilemma as we really could do with a definitive answer today if we are to travel tomorrow.
When I made the claim I automatically assumed that the whole cost of the holiday would be covered, after all it's a 'family' policy to cover a 'family' holiday, surely they would not expect us to travel without my wife? I assummed this would be the standard way of dealing with things across all insurance companies, but it seems not.
As far as I am aware, my MIL's condition was not pre-existing and it was serious enough for her to spend four days in hospital.
    Thanks for your advice.

All insurance companies have a 24/7 claim line - call it.

Bear in mind that you will probably find it very difficult (and expensive) to find insurance to cover you if your MIL falls ill again and you have to cancel or curtail any new holiday plans.

No, all companies have a 24/7 medical emergencies line. These are often run by third parties and cover immediate medical needs, not a question as to whether someone is covered.
    Gone ... or have I?

Always a good idea to check with the insurance before doing anything to assess if they will pay out.

If thye won't then sometimes there are alternative solution like reschedule

Hope if it was a pre existing condition you had notified them in advance.

Mine has a 24 hour emergency line manned by head office. No harm calling.
