I cant find borax for love nor money.
You don't need borax for laundry gloop. The recipe I wrote down from the laundry gloop thread only calls for a bar of soap and some washing soda crystals. I am using it now and find it excellent so far.

I currently use a empty 1.5ltr bottle of fabric conditioner, in that i add a litre of value shampoo, a scoop of value bio washing powder and topped up to the brim with water and drop in 6 drops of lavender oil. Give it a good shake and this lasts me about 2 weeks.

So far this has been really effective and I dont need to add any fabric conditioner as all my laundry seems to be softer now especially the towels.

This sounds a really good idea - but I'm concerned about the bubbles - doesn't it froth too much?

Good Housekeeping (they always have copies in the lunch area at work), say Ariel is the best, but Formile (sp?), by Lidl is second best.

I buy the huge (400 wash) tub of Kirkland powder from Costco which I think is about £15 and it's great for most washing. If I need fluffy towels I have a big box of Fairy non-bio which is lovely. I don't often use fabric conditioner as I find a quick tumble after things have dried softens and avoids ironing.

The Sainsbury's basics shampoo states "a little less lather". There is actually scarcely any lather visible in the machine window when you wash with it. I use one capful usually. Presume Tescos will be the same......it actually looks like an identical product.

You're right, borax isn't an absolute necessity but it is handy for stain-removal and brightening whites. It also results in a solution which has no suds. I must have found the very last box of "real" borax in my local hardware store last year.

I found several different recipes for gloop, some of which don't call for borax but I got some so I used it.

If anything's really heavily stained I chuck in a couple of tablespoons of Nappisan
