Quote from tiler seems a bit steep !?

Options
We are tiling our bathroom (round the bath to the ceiling and a splashback for the sink ) and are tiling the floor too. The walls are just over 6 metre square and the floor is 3m square. We have been quoted £360 for the walls and £160 for the floor. The wall tiles are largeish (bog standard - not mosaics or anything) and the floor tiles are bog standard squares and there's no tricky cutting in to be done. It just seems an awful lot but it's been years since we had any tiling done. (It's even more than the plumber is taking to refit the whole bathroom and put in a shower etc! ) He has said he will supply the grout and adhesive.......
If anyone has any comments - I'd really appreciate it !

If this is labour + adhesive only it does seem a bit steep.

  • Tiling can be very time consuming and so can be expensive!

You could always have a go yourself- DIY Tiling

I have tiled areas in the past and thought that it would take a couple of hours, but it has often taken twice as long.

It never hurts to get a few quotes.
  • Many tilers quote by the square metre. In practise, it's the edges/corners etc., that ttake the skill and the time.

Do it yourself, it's not difficult. Start with the splashback to see how easy it is.

Professional tilers have overheads and provide guarantees. These cost so your quotes may not be too far out. You generally get what you pay for.

    :)

Thanks folks - we had another tiler round today who had actually laid our kitchen floor a few years ago - he has quoted £280 which seems a lot more reasonable ! Just shows you though !!

on the high side, you could try and source the adhesive and grout yourself and reduce the cost

Most (if not all) tilers will only guanrantee work done if they supply their own adhesive or you buy what they trust. If you buy cheap adhesive then expect a cheap job.

Doing it yourself is a good option but I'd definately get a pro to tile a floor, it's messy/time consuming/soul destroying and if you don't get it right you'll soon know about it when your tiles crack or lift. (Can you tell I don;t like tiling floors?)
