Skype not working

I use a Mac computer.
Anyone have any ideas to help me access Skype?
Skype has been offering an upgrade when I used it this week. I did not take the offer. Today it said it had been upgraded, and I'd need to restart the computer, which I did. Now I get a pop up that says: "You cannot use the application "Skype" with this version of Mac OS X". Nothing loads. I have a balance for phone calls, and had hoped to show my son the views from my hotel balcony. The Skype website says they are working on the Mac versions.
this was on their website, it has disappeared:
System Update
A small number of Skype customers are experiencing difficulties using Skype. For more on system status and solutions, visit Skype Heartbeat.
and online the Inquirer says this:
VOICE OVER IP (VoIP) service Skype has issued a fix for Windows machines that suffered a major outage yesterday, while a Mac update is expected some time today.
Skype apologised for the downtime and issued a manual fix for the problem fairly quickly that involved deleting the shared.xml file from Skype's directory. This solved the problem for many, but others were reluctant to tamper with their files. It looks bad on Skype's part to expect its users to do so, especially when some of them might not be as technically savvy as others. The fix did work, however, as tested by several of The INQUIRER's staff.
Skype said it understood that its workaround was "fairly technical", so it issued an update for Windows-based machines to fix the login issue, available here. A Mac update should arrive today, but Skype users running Linux must continue to use the manual fix for now.

So which version of the Mac OS are you running? Skype 5.1 requires OSX 10.5.8 (Leopard) or later. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

10.4.11 Mac OS X is the version I'm running.
The old Skype worked just fine! I didn't ask for a change! (rant over).
The hotel broadband isn't the best, but any advice appreciated. Sorry to have posted in the wrong area.0 -

Skype 5.1 won't run on your system (Tiger). It can't have installed itself, you must have allowed it when it asked for your admin password. So you need to reinstall the older version (5.0?).
Really time that you upgraded your OS anyway, Tiger was released in April 2005, there have been 2 new versions since then, and a 3rd is imminent. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I have been able to download an old Skype which works. I'd like to ask how to update my old laptop operating system. Can I go online to get leopard? Do I have to purchase it? Is my antiquated Mac OS hardwired in, requiring a new computer?0

You have to pay to upgrade to Leopard or Snow Leopard.
No the OS is not 'hardwired' (that's why it's called 'software'). The version of OSX you can upgrade to will depend on the hardware specs of your Mac, but it's likely that you can at least upgrade to Leopard. Are you running an Intel Mac or a PowerPC Mac? Snow Leopard requires an Intel processor, Leopard will run on later PowerPC versions (G4 and up).No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Slow down pal!
Tiger to Leopard might be a good idea but it might not. If you've got a Power PC (G4 or 5) you may be better off sticking with Tiger as Leopard may run slower.
And here's the big point, if you've got any classic software you're running such as old claris software or Which?'s 120 letters etc. you'll lose it all (unless you've got a dual boot machine that boots in 9.2.2).
I've run Leopard for a year and not noticed any advantage over Tiger at all. Plus it's a hassle running old software (and yes I've got some good stuff that I need to run).
Switching back from Leopard to Tiger is a complete pig of a job so think carefully about what you do before you do it.There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0
