Hi All,
I've got an orchid dialler and currently use 18185 and 1899 for routing calls.
However I notice neither support 0871 call routing.
Does any provided offer a cheaper 0871 service?
I think the answer is probably no but wanted to check the combined MSE knowledge to confirm this

The answer is definitely no.
The cost of calling an 0871 number from a BT landline is generally 10p but, depending on the 5th 6th and 7th digits, some are cheaper.
However, it is nearly always the case that 0871 numbers terminate on ordinary geographical numbers so, as with 0870 numbers, if you can find out the geographical numbers, you can call them at a reasonable, instead of a rip-off, rate.
With regard to your Orchid, my suggested program routes 0871 calls via BT (with a 1280 prefix) at all times to ensure BT's published charges apply (the 084/087 rates charged by some CPS providers - even Primus - are 'uncertain' to say the least and it's beter to be safe than sorry).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
Thanks for that Heinz.
I thought that would be the case.
I got a BT bill in and was surprised at the amount but it was because of the 0871 calls.0 -
The way I work it to check 'say no to 0870' to find a national number. Use 18185 for a 4p connection then free call. My last call to the bank of Scotland credit card dept. cost me 4p rather than the expencive 0870 number.0

If I can't find a no. on 'say no to 0870' I use 181850

Indeed, for 0845 and 0870 calls, the per minute rate charged by 18185 is nearly always cheaper than BT.ioscorpio wrote:If I can't find a no. on 'say no to 0870' I use 18185
However, 18185 doesn't carry 0844 or 0871 calls (probably because of the numerous different rates).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. I know that at least last year, the Nottingham University NTL student phonecard offered 0871 calls at the phonecard's national rate - which is 1.8p/min at the weekend. The loophole has probably been closed by now, as it did offer scam money-making potential.
