Can Father in law reclaim PPI?

Sorry for the lack of details in this post but I am posting on behalf of my FIL.
He has a Clydesdale bank credit card which he is still using (mastercard i think) and up until last year was paying for payment protection insurance which covered various things including if you lost your house keys or cards they would replace them (this may have been two separate insurances). FIL doesn't need this cover and never asked for it, he just went along with what the bank person said when he applied for the card many years ago.
We only found out he was paying this last year as he asked us to look at his statement as there was a charge of £70 pm for this insurance (looking at previous statements it seems this insurance is not a set amount but a percentage of the o/s balance). We told him to cancel the insurance straight away which he did but after reading about people reclaiming PPI I wonder if he is entitled to any of this money back?

Thank you for the reply, the bank clerk didn't say anything wrong just didn't explain that the insurance was optional and what it actually covered, FIL has medicated controlled High blood pressure and diabetes and this wasn't asked about by the bank clerk, fil didn't disclose the details either as he wasn't really sure what he was taking out.
The complaint I suppose is that he was sold something without it being explained properly.
Oh and they had a similar issue with their mortgage, with Clydesdale as well and they put in a claim for their insurance and were rewarded some money.0 -

They didnt need to ask about existing conditions. Many pre-existing conditions do not prevent cover. They may restrict on those particular areas but they do not void the cover itself.

the evidence is just the way the clydesdale bank always sold their products, we had a loan with them and they put the hard sell on the insurances, saying that you really need them and not really giving the choice of saying no, the girl we dealt with practically said that we could not get a loan without taking out the cover as it was part of the agreement. (this was 8+ years ago that we had dealings with them though so it is probably different now)0 -

Unless there has been found to be a widespread failing in their process, that argument wont wash. They employ "x" number of staff. Whilst "y" number may have failed it doenst mean the rest did.
With loans and credit cards it is much easier to complain about than mortgage related ones as they dont share the same level of issues. Hence why I said they if they won with their mortgage complaint then the loan/credit card issue should be a doddle by comparison.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA).
